For those without a subscription to The Land the article outlines how Makayla fell in love with British White cattle in early 2021 after showing a British White heifer, then owned by Chatham High School, at a local interschool show.
Establishing her own stud in late 2021, she has now built a herd of eighteen females and four bulls (and convinced her parents to start their own stud). The family has travelled the country meeting fellow breeders and selecting females for their herds, creating a top-quality herd with diverse genetics with an eye to future commercial and show success.
Her desire to help preserve and promote British White cattle is fuelled by her belief that the breed’s docility and unique and attractive appearance, giving rise to its suitability for the hotter Australian climate, make it a breed worth growing for the Australian beef cattle market.
This view is echoed by Society President, Lindsay Murray, who notes that the breed has found favour and success in paddock-to-plate operations, and the sale of bulls into northern Australia for cross-breeding with the tropical breeds to improve eating quality and temperament.
Makayla also discusses her passion for showing cattle including plans to show at the Canberra and Sydney Royal shows in 2025 and her trip to the USA to attend the Cattlemen’s Congress.
