Methane Measuring Hood

A recent article on ABC featured this rather startling image of  new “wearable head gear” for cattle. However, there is a serious rationale behind the apparel. With the Australian cattle industry comprising part of agriculture and livestock farming asserted by the Australian Climate Council to produce nearly 65 per cent of Australian methane emissions, there are hopes devices such as these can paint a clearer idea of the cattle industry’s contested contribution to emissions.

The neoprene waterproof sock developed by ZELP Sense fits over the animal’s head and measures methane emissions in real time.

It is hoped the device can; assist in providing a clearer indication of what the beef cattle industry’s emissions actually are, demonstrate steps taken by the industry towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions; and help producers validate mitigation techniques such as genetic selection for low methane emission and the efficacy of feed supplements such as asparagopsis.
