A recent MLA article highlights the benefits of stress free stock handling in reducing shrinkage. Producer Sean D’Arcy from northern WA noted that epigenetic factors such as diet, activity and generational stress levels in cattle can all contribute to anxiety in cattle during mustering and transport and ultimately affect productivity.
Starting with cattle of an inherently docile temperament or including such cattle in a cross-breeding program was not mentioned. However, as highlighted by member Dr Ian Holmes, the inherent docile temperament of British White cattle is more than just a matter of convenience for breeders, it’s a key factor influencing productivity, feed conversion efficiency, profitability and farm safety.
The inherent docility of the British White breed has also been a key consideration for northern beef producers in selecting the breed for use in cross-breeding programs with their tropical breeds. We’ll have more on this in future editions.
